In recent years, the north american automotive industry has been under increasing pressure from  competitors, fluctuations in costs, the exponential increase in automotive software and increased amount of regulations. Customer expectations for reliable, safe and “greener” cars also are paying a big role.

Some questions facing the auto industry:

  • What changes we need to implement in order to cope with these new challenges?
  • How can we make our processes more effective and efficient?

This is where a good consultant can play a big role. How to identify a good consultant be identified?

1. Know who you are and what you want

Do you understand where you strengths and weaknesses are? This is a key factor that organizations have to consider to decide on the amount and type of help is needed. Consultants can cover a number of disciplines, across a number of processes and functions. A good consultant will:

  • Listen to the client goals.
  • Understand the context of the client, including strengths and weaknesses.
  • Provide custom solutions directly related to the client needs, including the interpretation and implementation of standards as well as managing projects to completion, and being continually engaged with the client.
  • Under-promise and over-deliver.

2. The experience

  • How many years of experience?
  • Good references? Important to check them.
  • Success stories?
  • IATF 16949, risk management, Core tools, CQIs, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Six sigma
    experience?

3. Understand the consultancy approach and capabilities

Each client and project requires different methodologies and resources. The size and type of project are another key factor to consider when selecting a consultancy.  Are there enough resources to support the project and its timelines? Are they going to be there when needed?

It is very important to understand and align the expectations on both sides.

4. Costs

A few thing s to consider:

  • Fixed cost or a per diem cost?
  • Competitive pricing structure?
  • How are invoices issued?
  • Paying as milestones are reached?

A contract detailing the services to be provided and the costing structure is essential to ensure that the expectations are understood and met.
